As you may or may not know there are many upon many different makes and models when it comes to Android smartphones. Unlike Apple with its iPhone, Google allows almost anyone to make a smartphone that runs the Android operating system. This means that there are more than plenty of models to choose from with different features, hardware specs and of course price.
But just like with anything that is mass produced there are always some versions that stand out above the rest and for some time it has been Samsung’s line of Galaxy smartphones. It all started with the original Galaxy S back in 2010 all the way to the current Galaxy S4 which has only been out a short period of time. The Galaxy S4 is one of the most anticipated phones of 2013 because it’s packed with performance and features.
Samsung is trying out some new ideas with the S4 and most of them work pretty well. One of the talked about features was the Smart screen options which let you do a variety of cool things by looking at the screen. For example using Smart stay will keep the screen on as long as you are looking at it. Smart rotation will adjust the screen orientation based on your angle of sight. Smart pause will pause the device when you look away from it or put it down so if you are watching a video and look away it will pause until you look back at it. This feature actually works pretty well in our tests. Another cool feature is Smart scroll which will detect your eyes looking at the screen and scroll down text on the page as you tilt your head while reading. This works pretty well too.
They also have some voice control features built into the phone that don’t work quite as well as the Smart screen features. For example you can say answer when the phone rings to have it answer the call which didn’t work out too well for us. Also saying words like cheese or smile when taking a picture only seemed to work half the time. You can also do things like snooze your alarm and control the music player by voice commands. And speaking of voice control we think that the voice to text feature when composing text messages could be a little better when it comes to accuracy and connectivity to the voice to text service.
The Air view features allow you to do things such as show the name of contacts assigned to speed dial numbers and magnify web pages by hovering your finger over them. This works pretty good for the most part but you have to get pretty close to the screen to make it work but it’s still pretty cool.
But overall the Galaxy S4 is a really nice phone packed with all the features you would expect such as tethering, VPN connectivity, NFC, S-Beam, HDMI output and more. The 13 megapixel camera takes nice pictures and they claim it has zero shutter lag. One feature people will like is the ability to take pictures with the front and rear camera at the same time and superimpose them into one picture. It will do the same thing for videos too. The screen sharing feature lets you share what’s on your screen with another device such as your TV if it’s supported. We really like the Multi Window function which allows you to run 2 apps at once in a split screen view. This is done by choosing the apps from a pull out quick launch pane that can be modified to show your favorite apps.
